Level 3 CyberEPQ (Extended Project Qualification) in Cyber Security (Cyber Hubs for 26-50 Learners)

Course Overview

Bridging the Gap between GCSE Computer Science and University

The CyberEPQ is the UK's first and only Extended Project Qualification in Cyber Security. The CyberEPQ has been developed by a consortium of education and Cyber Security partners to help provide a starting point for anyone considering a career in Cyber Security. The qualification is delivered using distance learning tools with its content developed by the National Occupational Standards in Information Security (NOS).

Based at the iconic Bletchley Park, Qufaro embraces the rich national heritage in codebreaking and cryptography which are the catalyst for delivering the next generation's cyber defenders. Qufaro delivers the qualification using a distance learning platform - the Moodle. From videos and quizzes to interactive learning materials and investigation tasks, it has been developed to help broaden Cyber Security knowledge and skills.

The modules are aligned with the National Occupational Standards as well as the Chartered Institute of Information Security Skills Framework. Ranging from Cryptography, Info-Sec Management and Risk Management to Digital Forensics, Business Resilience and Secure Testing. Modules are updated to keep up with the ever-expanding cyber industry and now include Big Data, Quantum Computing and Artificial Intelligence. The course is project-based, with an essay and a presentation based on what students have learned contributing to their final mark.

One of the greatest benefits of the CyberEPQ is the Independent Study Skills developed which prepares students for University and future careers. The CyberEPQ provides the framework to develop these skills and bridges the gap between GSCE Computer Science and University entrance level qualification in Cyber Security.

A number of prestigious Universities recognise the strong foundations which an EPQ provides for further study and independent working and consequently offer lower grade requirements for good results awarded for an EPQ. The CyberEPQ itself carries up to 28 UCAS points. In addition to this formal qualification, students gaining a grade B or higher are also granted membership to CIISec and could gain Industry Recognition from our sponsors Deloitte, for their research and essay.

The ultimate goal of developing cyber security skills and knowledge is to nurture highly qualified cyber security and digital forensics graduates who are optimised to work in government, business, finance, insurance, industrial, media, legal and intelligence services, as well as many other employment sectors. With cyber-attacks becoming more common and posing greater threats, no company or individual is immune. There will be a global cybersecurity workforce shortage of around 1.8 million people by 2022 and 60% of organisations have unfilled cyber roles.

The CyberEPQ helps students gain the required skills and knowledge to fill the cyber security skills gap in this expanding industry.

There are no study prerequisites.

What are Local CyberEPQ Hubs?

You may wish to consider the bigger picture and consider the benefits of setting up a local CyberEPQ Hub.

Being a member of your local CyberEPQ Hub, would not only build a network of support that can be accessed locally, provide great financial savings as well as the opportunity to develop stronger local cyber career opportunities for your students. We would encourage you to talk to your sister schools within your trust or local area to mutually reap the benefits of enrolling as a local CyberEPQ Hub and encourage more students into a stable and lucrative career.

Just one of the benefits of being part of a local CyberEPQ Hub would be to strengthen your ability to engage the support of local cyber businesses by coming into your schools to talk about Cyber whilst developing stronger relationships which could lead to future cyber career opportunities for your students.

This is a wonderful initiative that would inspire more young people into cyber where there is a massive shortfall between vacancies and applicants. Furthermore, by addressing both the closure of the massive cyber skills gap in the UK’s rapidly growing cyber industry and helping to generate greater youth employment, your local CyberEPQ hub would encourage a greater number of students to get involved at a much lower cost.

A few statistics to ponder:

  • Cybersecurity jobs remain in high demand in the UK and that number is only set to grow, with the skills gap still very much a reality for employers. Figures from the global information security workforce study, which show there could be around 100,000 unfilled cybersecurity jobs in the UK by 2022. ComputerWorld Aug 2019
  • An estimated 600,000 vacancies in digital technology are costing the country £63 billion a year[1], according to a report on skills shortages published in August 2018 by the Edge Foundation.
